Air traffic strikes in Italy and Great Britain

There are strikes at major airports in the UK and Italy at the end of May.

Both countries are popular destinations for short trips over a long weekend - the apf informs those affected about their rights:

Strikes in Italy

On May 28, airport employees at several Italian airports will strike - in particular the airports in Milan, Verona and Venice, which are popular travel destinations from Austria.

In cases where airport staff are on strike, passengers should proactively contact the airlines.

If the airline can invoke and prove an "extraordinary circumstance" (strike by airport staff), it is exempt from the obligation to pay compensation, but the entitlement to support and care services (reimbursement of ticket costs, re-routing to final destination, meals, hotel accommodation) remains.

In addition, Air Dolomiti flight personnel are on strike - in such a case, compensation payments must be made in addition to the aforementioned care services, which depend on the respective flight distance. As a rule, the airlines proactively make rebookings.

If the airlines do not (sufficiently) meet their obligations, those affected can contact the apf free of charge.

Standstill at Heathrow too

More than 500 Border Force employees at London's Heathrow Airport are to strike from May 31 to June 2, which is likely to lead to massive delays at security checks. In such cases, the apf recommends checking the flight status and allowing sufficient buffer time between arrival at the airport and departure.
