Cancellation of a customer card

from Jürgen Vogl

Mr. M. received a discounted customer card from an Austrian rail company sent to his home every year until he was 27 years old. In 2015, the customer card was sent to him, but he had to pay the full price. He therefore contacted the rail company by telephone, who informed him that the student discount ends at the age of 27 and that he can no longer buy the card at a reduced price of 19 euros. As he no longer wanted to buy the card at the normal price, he canceled the automatic renewal for 2016 during the phone call. When Mr. M. received the customer card again in 2016 and wanted to return it, he was informed that his telephone cancellation could not be reconstructed. As Mr M. was unable to reach an agreement with the rail company, he contacted apf, which obtained an extraordinary termination without damages.

If you would also like to cancel a customer card (only offered by ÖBB-Personenverkehr ), we explain the best way to proceed here:

  1. If you buy the Vorteilscard online, you can withdraw from the purchase within 14 days. The right of withdrawal does not apply if you buy the Vorteilscard at the ticket office.
  2. The Vorteilscard cannot be terminated during the contract period, even if, for example, there have been changes to the rail company's general terms and conditions. In the event of premature termination, you are therefore dependent on the company's goodwill.
  3. Ordinary termination is only possible at the end of the card validity. You must receive a renewal letter from the rail company before the contract expires. If you object in writing within four weeks of receipt, your contract will end. To be on the safe side, you can also cancel at any time during the contract period. In this case, however, the termination will only take effect at the end of the one-year period of validity.
  4. In the event of a dispute with the railroad company, you can lodge a complaint with the apf. You can find the apf complaint form here. This ensures that we can process your complaint quickly because we receive all the information we need to contact the company.
