Rail travel at Easter: What should I bear in mind?

from Georg Loderbauer

The upcoming Easter vacations are traditionally one of the busiest times for travel in Austria. For relaxed family visits and vacations, it is essential for rail passengers to know their rights in the event of possible irregularities such as delays, train cancellations, overcrowded trains and reduced performance on night trains.

Compensation for delays, train cancellations and train evacuation

In the event of a delay of more than 60 minutes at the destination, passengers are entitled to compensation of 25% of the ticket price. In the event of a delay of more than 120 minutes, this entitlement increases to 50%. These regulations also apply to train cancellations that lead to significant travel delays and to train evacuations, for example due to overcrowding. In such cases, passengers also have the right to a free onward journey to their destination under comparable conditions, for example on a subsequent train.

In the event of delays of more than 60 minutes, meals and refreshments must also be provided subject to availability. If the last connecting train is not reached due to a delay or a train cancellation or if the journey is interrupted, passengers are also entitled to use a cab or an overnight stay in a hotel.

In addition to The apf recommends making a seat reservation on busy travel days to ensure a seat.

Performance reductions in night train services

If a booked sleeper or couchette coach is not available and a seat is assigned instead, the passenger is entitled to a refund of the price difference between the classes booked and actually used.

Free arbitration by the apf

If there are any disagreements or problems with the enforcement of your passenger rights, the Agency for Passenger Rights (apf) is available as a free conciliation body. The apf supports passengers in asserting their claims against rail companies and finding an out-of-court solution. Further information can be found on the apf website

Recommendations for travelers

Due to the increased number of travelers during the Easter vacations, the apf:

  • Early planning: Book tickets and seat reservations in good time to avoid bottlenecks.
  • Up-to-date information: Use the rail companies' information channels to stay informed about any timetable changes or disruptions.
  • Documentation: Keep tickets, invoices for expenses and any confirmations carefully so that you can prove your claims if necessary.
