Rail: Automatic renewal of the ÖsterreichCard

from Jürgen Vogl

The complainant had the amount for her ÖSTERREICHCARD debited from her account monthly by SEPA direct debit. It is important to know that with this type of payment, a notice of termination or cancellation of the ÖSTERREICHCARD must be sent to the railroad company after receipt of the notification letter so that the card is not automatically extended for another year. After the amount continued to be debited monthly from the complainant's account after the ÖSTERREICHCARD had expired, she contacted the railroad company, which refused to cancel the card retroactively. She therefore lodged a complaint with the apf, which was able to mediate positively and resulted in acceptance.

Tips from the apf:[nbsp]

  • Inform the rail company of your new address in good time when you move.
  • Send your notice of termination to the rail company in good time (i.e. after receiving the notification letter) to avoid automatic renewal.
  • If you receive a new ÖSTERREICHCARD even though you have canceled the renewal, please return the card as soon as possible or return it to a ticket counter and ask for a confirmation.

If you also have a problem with a railroad company or transport association and a direct solution is not possible, you can find out here how you can submit your complaint to the apf. The apf ensures that you get your rights free of charge and commission-free.
