Rail: Train journey canceled due to thunderstorm
from Jürgen Vogl
Subsequently, however, the application for reimbursement of the hotel costs was rejected by the railroad company, which is why Ms. M. turned to the apf. The apf drew the railroad company's attention to the European Commission's guidelines on passenger rights, which made it clear that a canceled train is to be treated as a delay. For this reason, the rail company is obliged to provide assistance (e.g. drinks, snacks, necessary hotel accommodation, etc.) in accordance with Article 18 of the EU Rail Regulation. The railroad company finally complied with apf's request and transferred the hotel costs to Ms. M.
Recommendations/instructions of the apf:
- Always contact the rail company responsible in good time to find out about possible disruptions, train cancellations or delays and how to proceed.
- Always make a note of the name and service number after receiving information/confirmations from staff.
- If you are unable to start a train journey due to a delay or cancellation, the railroad company is generally obliged to offer you assistance on site (drinks, snacks, necessary hotel accommodation, etc.). If the rail company does not meet this obligation, keep all invoices so that you can actually prove the costs incurred.
