Your rights in the event of rail service closures

Line closures in rail traffic

The Arlberg railway line between Bludenz and Ötztal will be closed to local and long-distance traffic on the weekend of April 6-7 due to maintenance work.
This may result in delays due to the establishment of rail replacement services. The apf provides information about passenger rights in such cases:

A distinction is first made between one-way tickets and season ticketsKlimaTicket).

Delays with one-way tickets

If the destination is reached one hour late due to the maintenance work, passengers will be refunded 25 percent of the ticket price. From 120 minutes it is even 50 percent of the ticket price. The destination stated on the ticket applies, including the transfer connection.

In addition, passengers must be offered an appropriate proportion of meals and refreshments if these are available on site (at the station or on the train). This includes, for example, bottles of water and small snacks - but also meals in the event of longer delays.

If the last connecting train is missed due to the delay, you are also entitled to an overnight stay in a hotel or transportation by cab. It is important to note that the fixed maximum amount for an overnight stay in a hotel in local transport is 80 euros - for a cab ride 50 euros.
If possible, a hotel booking should be made in coordination with the railroad company for local and long-distance transport (e.g. by hotel and cab voucher).

If expenses have to be incurred independently, it is advisable to keep the original invoices and then claim them from the rail company.

After the journey, you can submit both the compensation and the reimbursement to the rail company's customer service.
If passengers do not receive an answer, or only an inadequate one, apf will mediate with the rail company free of charge.

Delays with season tickets

Persons in possession of KlimaTickets or other annual tickets do not receive compensation for individual journeys.
In this case, a flat-rate, statutory punctuality rate is assumed per month, below which compensation must be paid by the railroad company.
The punctuality rate for regional KlimaTickets is 95 percent, for KlimaTicket Austria 93 percent.

To receive compensation after the ClimateTicket expires, you must register with One Mobility Gmbh AND ÖBB Personenverkehr.
You can read more about this here: https://www.apf.gv.at/de/puenktlichkeit-jahreskarten.html

The rights to care services (meals, hotel, cab) as described above also apply to passengers with KlimaTicket.
In these cases, apf recommends that you document the delay, the journey and the need for overnight accommodation well and contact the railroad company.
