Booking of seats for infants possible on nightjet.at / Booking of car passenger trains

In our blog in June, we dealt in detail with the booking of seats for small children in the ticket store of ÖBB-Personenverkehrs AG (ÖBB-PV): There are now improvements for passengers at www.nightjet.at. We also took another look at the bookability of night trains via the portal and can report a change here too

Booking seats for small children

apf already pointed out in June that ÖBB-PV assumes in its ticket stores that children under the age of six share a seat with an adult. This led to problems and sometimes to confusion on the part of customers, especially on longer routes and on overnight journeys.

One of apf's suggestions is that the lack of a separate seat for the infant should be clearly stated at the time of booking. In addition, the booking screen should be changed to offer the option of booking a separate seat, couchette or sleeper berth if an infant is specified.

As apf was able to discover, ÖBB-PV has created a corresponding infant booking option for night trains for the booking portal www.nightjet.com. This makes it possible to reserve a separate, chargeable seat for infants in seating, sleeping or couchette carriages.

To obtain an infant ticket, it is necessary to make the booking via www.nightjet.com and not via the regular ÖBB-PV ticket store at www.oebb.at (store.oebbtickets.at).

According to ÖBB-PV, the implementation of infant tickets for night trains is possible as www.nightjet.com only sells tickets for direct night train connections. According to ÖBB-PV, tariff complexities in connection with infants, as with day trains, do not arise.

The railroad company is also already working on implementing the regular ticket store at www.oebb.at. However, according to ÖBB-PV, this is very complex and will take some time.

From apf's point of view, the development of night trains is already very pleasing. For longer journeys with daytime connections on ÖBB-PV trains, however, the apf continues to recommend that you take a night train:

• When booking tickets for infants, pay particular attention to whether or not you want to book a separate seat for the infant.
  
  
• If you have any questions, we recommend that you call ÖBB-PV and make a booking by telephone if necessary.
  
  
• If you would like to book a ticket/reservation for an infant under six years of age online/mobile (according to the current situation), this is currently only possible by specifying the age as at least six years so that the system offers a separate ticket/reservation for the infant. For the seat, you also only pay for the reservation, not the ticket.
  
  
• Reservations are free of charge for certain offers, such as up to 4 children with the Vorteilscard Family from ÖBB-PV.

Booking of motorail trains via www.nightjet.com

It is currently no longer possible to book Autoreisezug tickets on the www.nightjet.com portal. Bookings can only be made via the regular ÖBB-PV ticket store at www.oebb.at (but via www.nightjet.com/de/angebote/automotorrad). If the option "Book tickets including car" is selected on www.nightjet.com, the passenger will be redirected to the regular ÖBB-PV ticket store.

apf had previously identified the problem on www.nightjet.com that, after selecting a specific travel date, the portal displayed available trains with a different date if the train was not offered on the desired date. This led to confusion when making bookings, as it was relatively easy to overlook the fact that the proposed train might depart on a different date.

This should no longer occur if you are forwarded to the ÖBB-PV ticket store.

The apf recommends traveling by car train:

• Tickets for travelers and the vehicle should always be booked together. Do not make separate bookings for passengers and vehicles, as this can lead to problems if there is a lack of availability.
  
  
• Check the details of the route, date, passengers and the vehicle being carried in detail - so as not to provide any incorrect information.
  
  
• The ticket should only be purchased shortly before departure via the ÖBB-PV website or the ÖBB app, for example the day before. Please note any special refund conditions.
  
  
• Passengers should check a few hours before departure whether the booked connection is running smoothly (e.g. using ÖBB-Scotty at fahrplan.oebb.at).
