Train cancellation due to rail strike - passenger rights

from Georg Loderbauer

A rail strike in Italy led to restrictions on train services at the weekend. Regional trains as well as intercity and high-speed connections were affected.
The unions are demanding pay rises, better working conditions and more safety for railroad staff. The apf informs affected passengers about their rights in the event of delays and train cancellations.

The Italian railroad company FS (Ferrovie dello Stato) had called on passengers in advance to postpone their journeys or to check the current timetable.
These measures resulted in costs for numerous travelers who were affected by the train cancellations and delays.

Passenger rights in the event of train cancellations and delays

In the European Union, uniform rules apply to the rights of rail passengers, which also apply in Italy. Here are the most important points:

Compensation for delays

  • In the event of a foreseeable delay of 60 minutes or more, passengers are entitled to compensation amounting to 25% of the ticket price.
  • If the delay is 120 minutes or more, passengers are entitled to 50% of the ticket price.

Assistance services If there is a significant delay, rail companies are obliged to offer passengers assistance services:

  • Information: Passengers must be informed promptly about the duration of the delay and about alternative travel options.
  • Catering: For longer waiting times, snacks, meals and drinks must be provided if they are available.
  • Accommodation: If onward travel on the same day is impossible, the rail company must cover the cost of hotel accommodation.

Alternatives in the event of train cancellations If a train is canceled, passengers can:

  • Request a refund of the ticket price if the trip is not taken.
  • Alternatively, insist on a rebooking or onward journey, also by another means of transport, if possible.

Practical tips for travelers

  • Inform yourself before you travel: Use the official apps or websites of the rail companies to obtain up-to-date information about delays and cancellations.

  • Collect evidence: Keep tickets, invoices and other receipts so that you can claim compensation.

  • Submit an application: As a rule, compensation must be actively applied for. Many rail companies offer online forms for this purpose.
